The story of the first valentine is a thrilling story with a mad king, one of history’s most climatic battles, and poetry. It is a complex tale that involves two great kingdoms and all the machinations of a royal court. Part Shakespeare, part Game of Thrones, all history that deserves to be remembered.

As several viewers have noticed, I misstated the dates of the the plague of Paris by a couple of centuries. The outbreak referenced in the episode occurred between 1348 and 1350. I apologize for the error. Many people have commented that the episode was confusing. Obviously that was not my intent. The main plot, however, includes just two factions- the Orleans/Armagnacs and the Burgundians- over just two generations, under a single monarch.
You are so great in all things you can easily be forgiven for one minor oversight or misstatement. Thank you, i have learned so much and gotten so much enjoyment....

@memathews Yes, there was a lot of royal intermarriage in Europe and I think that's where the insanity of this King Charles and of all European monarchy comes from. They thought that their "blue blood" was so superior to that of ordinary people that they just married each other to keep the royal blood lines "pure". As such, I feel that European history can be better understood once it is accepted that it was molded by an incestuous clan of congenitally defective people. ... jkulik919@gmail.com
@High Path Well, that should keep the Republi-con paranoia machine well greased and oiled for a while...
@Allan Richardson What part of the constitution would require a US citizen to renounce any other ennoblement they may be entitled to from any other sovereign state prior to taking the presidential oath ? ( I did not say the presidency as such would be changed to an absolute monarchy or that there was a formal act of union to any other sovereign state as independent equals - though such things may occur if carried out under due agreed constitutional arrangements (could it be done under executive order ?)
Wow, can't tell the player apart without a program and numbered jerseys.
I have not seen all of the History Guy episodes, so perhaps you have already done one on the subject. I would love to see an episode on the 140th New York Volunteer Infantry.
Dude, you’re killing me! I’m a 71-year-old retired Marine and I am still learning shit from you. Semper Fi
All I can say is those poor children!
Love the channel. Listening to the histories of the middle age royal back and forths would drive anyone mad.
I need a scorecard to keep track of the players!
Timeline thru me off for a second when it was said King Charles the 5th died in 1380 .. then seconds later described how France was suffering from the after affects of the black plague after the 1550s.. pretty sure he meant the 1350s
I was going to comment on the mix-up of the dates of the plague of Paris, but I see that you already corrected that. since I'm here I will say that your presentations are really my favorite on ALL of MNthe. sometimes the insight is absolutely brilliant, like the show on Reagan, Soviets and Able Archer war games in the 80's. ...Really dive deep into latter years of the Cold war. despite having many shows on war, you you don't over glorify it... which is a big problem with history teaching. this particular story shows how so many wars were senseless (family real estate grabs 😒) you have a really good delivery and tempo for speaking but having watched about 60 of your shows, and as a humble French speaker, I have to point out you kind of MURDER FRENCH place names - Valloy for Valois, etc. I was thinking you could use Google translate Eng - > French which wouldn't change the spelling (or French to Eng. as well) and so conveniently both squares of the translation offer a PRONUNCIATION BUTTON will give you a reliable pronunciation and no one will do a double take...like " what did he say?" I always recommend you to friends and have posted your best shows links on social media. so, like many others, look forward every single week to your new shows. you're our Valentine (is still Feb. ..😍🥳). cheers -- Le renard/ Kitsune of Ezo 🇺🇲👋 --
Did anyone notice that two Bob Dylan songs use lines in the poem? "Im sick of love." "But I was born too late"
For Black History Month would you please consider a video about: Pauli Murray. Thanks heaps for all that you do!
You got muddled with your dates. You mentioned the ascendancy of Charles in 13?? & shortly after was telling about the Black Death 'in 15??'.
Thank you
This man has made more quality media than the History channel has in the past 10 years.
Sir, I want to say you have one of the best history channel on the Tube. I find the stories wonderfully done with a personal touch that gives it strength, weakness, highs and lows that bring out true power in the way how you yourself not only offer information, but do it with
A way of a truly dedicated and invested Historian!
BLINKIST.... Because product promotion deserves to be remembered.
The glasses. Not working.
Heck of a lecture . . but Is this going to be on the test?
Great story - but wait - - WHAT NO PIRATES!?!
What is confusing is the convoluted familial relationships in nobility. And you made perfect sense. So much history is linked to family. And sadly now we have the Trumps making "history". Plenty of history in America's future, I think.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, the complexity enhances the storyline. Thanks for sharing. 👍
no pirates
Wait, wait,...I need a study guide...a Venn diagram will not cut it for the royals history. I saw a history of The Plantagents recently and needed a flow chart! I wonder if 700 years from now, our descendants will think we are just as confusing and crazy?! Thanks THG😁
As a child of Twentieth Century America, I'm conscious of having been governed by fools and knaves. Some things never change.
History Guy, love your channel, but yes I was confused. Once I got past the numerous characters, I was still left confused at the end as to why this letter had a Valentine reference. Please help!
Wrong century for yon Plague, yet 5 is oft mistaken for 3...
most forbidden documentary--- Europa The Last Battle at archive . org
The story of James I of Scotland is similar, but not as confusing, and it eventually had a happy ending
And I thought US history was convoluted.
I too will enjoy a little bit of, 'House of Bourbon Madness', once I open my bottle of Woodford Double Oaked Bourbon a little later. To an other fine episode, cheers, History Guy!.
Huh? What?
The way I see it, no one in the US celebrated Valentine's Day until the Chinese arrived, with their ancient custom of giving gifts in red envelopes at Asian New Year, which is usually in late January or February. Christians were probably afraid that people would pick up this custom and forget their faith for a while.
After listening to this, I suddenly remembered why I dropped out of Late Middle Ages European History class in college in the '70's, being unable to keep up with who's who and who married who and who killed who.
I am so glad 9 found this channel. You have an amazing and captivating way of presenting history. I would love an episode on your favorite history story or fact.
What a soap opera!
This reminds me of a Dumas novel. :)
Much better than the history channel. Personal and authoritative. Thank you sir
Gotta love the elites. They are so much smarter than us peasants. Never fear, the neo-feudalists are here to save us from ourselves.
50 seconds in and I shout at the monitor, "But are there pirates?!"
That tongue-in-cheek synopsis was priceless! 😂😆 Hope you're celebrating with your sweet valentine. 💜🤗
Thank you for another interesting video History Guy
Sir, You really make great videos. But can you please provide them with subtitles/cc? It would really be helpful.
You make history compelling. unfortunately it has an adverse effect on my professional life. Watching when I should be updating my profile and completing CE deadlines. :-(
Thanks for the recap History Guy. I was going to have to re-watch the whole video again, but this time with a score card to keep track of all the intrigue.
got there eventually
mnthe.info/hello/vmEISc6e4tLwn8TyS14ncw
cant post the link You tube wont let me. please let me know what you think
The History Guy - please watch the "Time Team Classics" you will love it!!
THANK YOU FOR THE RECAP! IT REALLY HELPED! ❤️
WOW. One of the saddest love stories yet! Thanks for the Recap as for several moments, having not taken notes, I became lost in the madness going on. Defiantly History Worth Remembering
Wow, those are an awful lot of people's names to follow!
This was not so much about Valentines that’s why it was so confusing. Not his best
How is it not about Valentine's Day? It is literally the history of what is generally acknowledged to be the first written Valentine.
Holy crap I couldn’t follow any of that. History Guy, next time put up a chart or visual aide cause without that final recap it was too dense to follow.
Love the content, keep up the great work!
Just two families over just two generations.
You look like you are losing weight.
... Or-Leon !....Jesus!
There must be pirates involved somewhere in this story!
Power, women & prison created Valentines day, but were did prince John come io with the term Valentine?
Great work, yet again Sir! Not entirely sure that Duc Charles' "I am Already Sick of Love" meant exactly what we would now interpret... It may well have meant "I am Sick With Love". I think medieval quotes in particular should not be taken as literally as first read.
@The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered Aha! Yes. "I am already tired of love." 👍
The line written in French was "Je suis desja d'amour tanné."
Be my Valentine ... else I'll lay siege to your Castle
Professor~ I know you meant to say 1347-1352, and not 1547-1552 in referring to the first black plague of Europe. Just to let you know that we are listening as we sloush in our seats at the back of the class. Very convoluted tale of the nastiest "Noble" men of the time. I first was fascinated by Engurrand VII, Lord de Coucy; he who was "not king, not..." Well, another story
You are correct, I stated the dates wrong. I apologize for the error.
Well, that is the most un-valentine story I've ever heard.
I disagree that it is completely un-valentine, in that Charles did seem to legitimately love Bonne of Armagnac. But yes, the story of what is generally acknowledged to be the first written Valentine is not what you would expect.
Huh
Your hair looks better longer like that.
sigh, too much advertising now ruining this channel. love the content though
I won't go so far as to say that all the meandering elements were convoluted, but I do have to ask, what was the lesson of this history?
History doesn’t always have to bear a lesson, but many can be derived from this story, including, of course, that surprising things can come from the meanderings of history.
I was confused when you referenced the Black Plague being in the 1500s at 3:40. Wouldn’t that be the 1300s?
@The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered I had to rewind and thought I heard wrong or my memory of the Black Plague was wrong. But I get it. Happens to me too! Love your channel and appreciate the history and have learned a few things. Faithful watcher. Keep em coming. Tom.
Yes, my mistake. I apologize for the error.
Those people were nuts!
Could do a video on the Mary Rogers case and Edgar Allen Poe's infatuation With her. Going so far as to write a story about it. I think your subscribers might find it interesting. Great channel!
wow who on first, whats on second, happy valentines,I think???
Video starts at 2:40
Fascinating, could have definitely used a few family tree exhibits to follow the convoluted family rivalries!
I very much enjoy your take on European history, but were there enough pirates?
Let's take a moment to think about this "holiday" and what it entails. Gifts for women. How many commercials and ads are directed to men for what they can get for women. Once again, men are appreciated for what they can provide. I have four married sons, and not one of them has received more that a card for Valentines...ever. Neither have I. While it sounds like I am crying, I am not. Just observing.
Ummm...could you go over that just one more time?🤔
I knew Dr. Who wasn't as shitty as they say.
Very good video! Unrelated topic, but the history of Ed Link and his Link Trainer (flight simulator) is history that deserves to be remembered, as it trained thousands of pilots around the world.
Yes! Great idea!
And all this subterfuge and Machiavellian conniving was done with lemon juice invisible ink - not abandoning damaged laptops containing porn and evidence of treasonous international payment for play influence peddling. Amazing!
Too many 'would's.
This was fascinating Sir, as all you produce is, but I personally had trouble keeping track of who’s who and who-did-what after about 2 minutes. Complex, to say the least. Along with some seriously sick practices of the age, like marrying off a six year-old. I’m wondering if in a coming episode THG might cover a piece of history related to this long and complicated saga: that is the Duke de Berry’s “Book of Hours,” which I have heard of, but not clear it is associated with the same Duke you reference. Would be an interesting tie-in. TY.
My head is spinning! Royals and their antics.
is there a problem in the years? talking about 1300, then talking about 1500s then back to 1300s i even got CC started to make sure i was hearing it right.
This all seems like a dull day in a typical soap opera ....
I started to watch it... then came the ads... næækst❗️
It's hard to keep all the nobles and their relatives straight. You need a diagram.
Doesn't "Valentine" suggest that it was written in celebration of St. Valentine's day? But this wasn't in celebration of anything like that, and people have composed love-poems for centuries, men and women! Why would this story even be CONSIDERED as the origin of St. Valentine's?!?
So, it’s the first anti-valentine?! Without watching it all again, (I did try to scan through for a while) was Valentine her name, or pet name, or a common term of affection?
It is not fair to say that it is an "anti-Valentine." Farewell to Love is certainly a love poem. No, her name was not Valentine- he was writing to Bonne of Armagnac. The fact that he refers to her as "my very gentle valentine" is why the poem is widely acknowledged to be history's first Valentine.
There were so many greedy men doing each other wrong or in that I actually lost track & interest, the poem was lovely.
“Valois” is pronounced “valwa”.
My head is spinning...
Blimey, I thought my family was messed up....
I looked up the origin of St. Valentine's day, and all I found were massive amounts of orgies. Temple and church-sponsored, some not, basically, every time, it had something to do with sex.
Master of history
Know who we love, History Guy? You. That's who we love! Thanks for all you do putting out such great material!
No pink tie?
Please move your ad reads to the end of your videos so they're easier to skip.
If you got lost, join the club, I think that was the plan. What is love after all? It’s not a tale of incest, madness, pedaphilia, jealousy, envy, pride, lust, like the “royal” families. It’s a tale of life and a state of mind.
Here's a suggestion for an episode: The life of Thomas Miller Beach aka Henri le Caron.
You'd never right a piece of fiction this convoluted. In other words, truth is stranger than fiction.
4:05 The more I look at this painting the harder it becomes to look away. Why do they all have the same face? What are those horses smiling about? What small malnourished child is hiding in the fourth man from bottom rights armor?
In simple term a pre-Hatfield-McCoy feud but on a much larger and Royal blood scale
@51WCDodge True, that is right like I didn't get to choose to take care of my little sister kids I was forced too and then that thing told them not to mind me or to listen to me and now they told three to do the same,so I get to leave first chance no remorse. the only reason one of them cares about free money each month
@Cornbreadfed Kirkpatrick The problem with families, is you don't get to choose 'em! Enjoy the journey. :-)
@51WCDodge yes but the thing that birthed me said certain things never happened I know better, she even hid her mom's bible and her cousin book on her family from me motherly hate at its best huh
@Cornbreadfed Kirkpatrick yeah my fmily had that as well. Only found out after my Mother died she made sure somone told me.But hey All families are human :-)
@51WCDodge I've been preparing myself when I overhead my aunt saying something about a family secret that was never mentioned but knew about, acknowledged but never went forward
