The Order of the Pug and the Age of Enlightenment

In the late seventeenth century, Europe was in the throes of the Age of Enlightenment. The new ideas of rationalism contributed to the overthrow of an English King, the creation of modern Freemasonry, and a Papal Bull that all represented a massive shift in the thinking of early-modern Europe. The History Guy recalls the forgotten history of the Order of the Pug.

  • As some have noted, I say that Mary was James II only child, when, in fact, he had another daughter, Anne. Anne reigned after the death of William from 1702 - 1714. However, as both of James II's surviving daughters were protestant when he was crowned, and it seemed unlikely that James would father another child, the reasoning was the same. The birth of James Francis Edward Stuart, otherwise known as "the old pretender" changed the perception. I am sorry for the error. A few have mentioned that William and Mary were not of the House of Hanover. That is correct. After the death of Queen Anne in 1714 the crown went to the descendants of William's cousin, Sophia, Electress of Hanover. At the time of the Order of the Pug the English crown had been with the House of Hanover for 22 years, and it was, in fact, the Hanoverians that the Jacobites were opposing.

    • Another wonderful glimpse into an obscure but interesting part of history! But a slight amendment to the above - strictly speaking William's mother and Sophia were cousins - not William and Sophia. Williams mother, Mary, was the daughter of Charles I. Charles I's sister Elizabeth was mother of Sophia, so they were the true cousins. And by the same route, William and Mary were cousins, which I had never realised before. Mary II's father was James II - the brother of William's mother. And exactly 150 years later, Victoria married her cousin, Albert!

Churchill burned alive about 70,000 defenseless civilians, mostly old people women and children including thousands of babies. This was a major war crime, but the war winners never admit to their war crimes.

    • @Timothy Somerville Who cares it was a long time ago. If you want to go back far enough most everyone ancestor was either a slave or slave owner most likely both. I have read that in Rome slaves had slaves. Slavery has existed since mankind started. Don't me wrong slavery is an evil that sits right next to murder. A more pressing question is the slavery going on today in most all counties. Do some research and be ready to be shocked. Every Pimp is a slave owner, every sweat shop owner is a slave owner, and so on. If someone is holdeng a person aginst their own will is guilty of slavery. When I lived in Northern California mondern day slavery raids were being carried out regularly around the Bay Area, that is where my eyes were opened. When the after math of a raid was shown on TV the slave owner and the slave were the same race most of the ttime. The typical slave was smuggled into the USA and right into a sweat shop or a pimps stable. The poor sex slaves would be worked for a few years until they were used up and infected with almost STD known to exist, then tossed out by turninng them over to the INS. Most were/are young women but not all. Squawk about that insted of what someone did 200 years ago. BTW the Red Barron was German, Manferd von Richtoff (I'm not sure of the spellling.)

    • @Timothy Somerville 400 years before , it was popular for some Muslims to own Christain Slaves , mostly slaves from the north of Europe. They were in demand from at least 400 or more years before their was an African ever sold to a non-American. The Christian of the Caucasus were being held and sold to mostly wealthy Muslim people. It was a status symbol , they were not needed to gain wealth , just status, very few owned more than one white Christian, as they were hard to smuggle and often were rescued by bounty hunters. Making ownership a lofty sight to be held by one's peers. Another SAD note in Mankind's Dark History. When will we be free of one another?

And that those that do are evil" you know... with the whole actual reason WHY Protestants left the Catholic fold? (and yes, I know that was HIGHLY generalized and simplistic a reason)

  • Technically they protested the ending of persecution of non Anglicans. James II had banned laws persecuting anyone based on religion including Jewish people and protestants who weren't Anglican. All were no longer required to be Anglicans to avoid death and severe punishments. He did NOT require people to become Catholic. The poor guy just wanted to end the horrors that led to the death of his father and a horrible childhood trying to survive religious wars. The Bishops said (accurately) that it was unconstitutional to allow other religions any freedom or rights. So you are inadvertently supporting people mad they can't kill Jewish people, Catholics, Quakers, Mennonites, and any other minority that was in England at the time. Previously they could (and did) do pogroms and murder great numbers of Jewish people on a regular basis. His brother Charles had outlawed the killings, but James made it official that nobody would be forced to be in any religion.

  • I am just being anal, I know, but there never was a William III of Orange. He was William III, King of England, Scotland and Ireland and William Prince of Orange. Moreover, he and his wife Mary ruled as King and Queen not as Regents. A point of interest - they are the only ever joint monarchs in British history. The other Queens have all been Queen Consorts and, as such, do not have any power and did not succeed as monarch upon the King's death. You will notice that the current Queen has a Prince Consort as a King consort does not exist, as a King would normally be "senior" to a Queen. Delightfully old fashioned!

  • Interesting. The Masonic lodge isn't secret nor are it's membership. They hold secrets down from the times. They have open houses, assemble for the dying and dead and provide services and aid. They believe in a Supreme Being. World wide there are members in almost every country and religion. A grand lodge of an area must conform within guidelines to be recognized by other grand lodges. Members can't attend meetings in non-recognized lodges/grand lodges. They are the largest and first Fraternal order. They have many types and large medical hospitals that care for those who come. Their doctors teach at medical schools and tend to those with Burns, broken or missing limbs, eye sight issues, and many others. We use the KJV Bible for our "secret" work which is taken from Brother King James bible.
