  • Dogs are so special. They love us unconditionally. When I was a kid, I was fortunate enough to befriend a formerly stray Collie on a friend’s farm. This dog would accompany me as I wandered about the farm. One day when I was sent out to pick blackberries on a remote part of the farm, the dog went along with me. An angry bull charged at me out in the middle of a pasture and I froze with fear, knowing that I had no chance to get away. Quick as a flash, the dog ran at the bull and leaped at it, latching onto it’s massive snout and hanging on. I found my feet and ran for the fence surrounding the pasture. As I got to the fence, the dog ran past me as I dropped and rolled under the barbed wire. I loved that dog after that and made sure that I always gave him a treat or two when going to visit our friend’ farm. I will never forget him, even though that was 50 years ago.

    • If while me and my dog (Skip) were out and I saw a squirrel I would say “Get-em” and skip would take off after them. I would then pet and praise him afterward. It wasn’t long before he was pretending to chase after squirrels that were not there in hopes of getting petted. Fat chance I would tell him.

  • I have had alot of animal babies. My mother was a much-tried saint. Two geese, two ducks, two turtles, rabbits, chickens, dogs, cats, goldfish, tropical fish, and the neighbors' donkey. I currently have five cats and one small boa. My dogs were very selfless and loving. My cats are narcissistic and loving. The snake just sort of just hangs out. What's interesting is seeing all the mice all neatly in a row on my doormat. It finally broke me from going barefoot to get packages at the front doorstep. That squishy sound got to be rather upsetting.

  • Actually, there are plenty of working cats today. In rural areas, “barn cats” keep the rodents down to a manageable level. Barn cats aren’t a breed, of course. They are the cats that hang out in the barn, knowing a good thing when they see it. Most of them are semi-feral, rarely allowing a human close enough to pet them, and they can be quite prolific. Some families have both pet cats and barn cats.

  • I had a dog who was just terrific at cleaning stuff up. He'd spend hours cleaning his balls. He'd clean his arsehole on the carpet. One time I couldn't get him away from a patch of grass he'd been gnawing at in a park. When I went over to see what the hell was keeping him, he jumped up and licked my face. That's when I realised that he'd been cleaning up someone's turd that they'd accidentally left behind. I think of this every time I see someone allow their dog to lick their face. Such a clever and energetic dog. It's no wonder that so many people insist on bringing them along to the cafe these days. Someone's half eaten croissant may need cleaning up.

  • I once lived with a friend, and between us, we had several cats, including one we brought in from outside, who was boisterous, friendly, but liked to play hard, and my long-haired princess of a cat, who was the very definition of a lap cat - sweet, didn't like being outside for any reason, pampered, liked her people way more than cats, etc. But when two mice came into the house from the vents, it was those two cats - the rough-and-ready outdoor cat, and my sweet princess, who were the only two who were even interested, and mine caught them both in her paws, which was quite a feat, since her previous owner had declawed her. So, you never know.

  • We had a great cat on the farm that was a real hunter. He'd wait patiently for hours for a careless rat to poke its head from a hoghouse. Some were quite big judging by the rathides randomly scattered around the yard. That cat would turn a rat inside out, like a pair of pants. I was never able to witness him catch a rat and would've loved to see how he did the inside-out trick, but he was always on the job. The rathides were like receipts for work done. :) We had other cats but never one like that. He would climb 30' up a tree to raid a robin nest, but would find baby rabbits and gently carry them to the house to show us. If all cats were like that I'd have a greater affection for cats.

I'm having problems with my rottweiler/collie mix doggos catching and bring small rodents like mice, rabbits, moles, and shrews. Depending on which one of the four catches it, will effect how alive it is, the pretty, dumb boy will proudly walk right up and drop a perfectly healthy but wet rabbit on my lap and the smartest black and tan will bury 3 dead chewed up ones under my pillow as a surprise.

  • I have only had two animals in my life: the first was a Blue Point Siamese cat that ended up weighing between 23 and 25 lbs. and that size brought about his name - Nicodemus, who was reported to be a very large man in the Bible. Nicky loved only three people - my Mother, my girlfriend and me. Any one else got either the cold shoulder or a growl, letting them know his displeasure w/ said person. Unfortunately, Nicky also had a bit of an attitude and would terrorize the neighborhood's domestic animals, going so far as to kill certain offending dogs that barked too much for his tastes. That mean streak ended up costing him, as I found him dead in my studio one day after work, w/ foam trailing out of his stiff, open mouth - an obvious poisoning. He was just three years old.

    • If they're not socialized they literally are wild cats. I've made the mistake of picking a "cute kitten" not knowing it was unsocial. Calm would last a couple seconds before "cute kitten" turned into a blurry mass of fur with razor claws ripping up my arm and hand. That happened more than a few times. I don't pick up cats anymore. A good example is the vintage video from a TV station working with Humane Society trying to place a large cat. Cat suddenly loses its mind and begins freaking out leaping, clawing, screeching and drawing blood. They never said if the cat got adopted. A cat that big can do a number on you. My daughter was stalked by a male cat in our backyard. The (bleep) thing leaped onto her shoulders, dug in and began biting her head. Neighbor kids got the monster off her. I trained our Border Collie at the time to hate the cat and chase it every opportunity. The dog then terrorized every cat it saw but I didn't object because they were strays and/or unsocialized maniacs.

  • I live in a fairly rural area. Almost every hardware store that sells animal feed or even birdseed will have a cat or two. One place on a fairly busy road has a sign on the door asking that you not let the cats out please. It's even printed larger than the state mandated mask sign. So cats still work for a living in some places. 😎

  • Our Aussie dog has adopted three wild cats who just love her! They are inseparable! Everyone had to go to the vet for shots, etc., and now they run the house. When we used to stay at the old Rockefeller estate on St. John in the USVI (before the hurricane wiped the 70 year old place off the map a couple of years ago), there were always calico cats everywhere. The 17th century pirates and the Spanish dropped them off there occassionally, along with little burros. There had been poisonous snakes on the island, till someone brought mongoose over, and they wiped out the snakes, while the cats killed the rats and mice. The cats all over the island were all from Blackbeard the pirate or something, supposedly, but maybe that's just a story for the tourists...

Written by Rudyard Kipling, who lived in India, it is a crazy fantasy story that I loved as a kid! It was written in 1894, but is still amazing, weird, but amazing. It is just a short story, so you should be able to easily find it online...

    • @LuvBorderCollies my parents had a small dog, 25 cm shoulder height max, frail legs, a mut of I don't know how many races, probably some dachshund and Jack Russell, among others, but was she a ferocious hunter. We had muskrats on our land, and she was the only dog that would kill them, even when they were double her size. We had another dog we had adopted, perhaps a vizsla, looking at pictures, that beast was too good in nature. He would curiously poke his nose at the groggy rat, and it would bite his nose. Meanwhile, our little huntress would sneak up from behind and kill it with a bite to the neck.

      barvdwbarvdw19 өдрийн өмнө
    • Not all dogs are the same even within the breed. On the farm we had German Shepherd/Collie mutt that lived to kill rats. At first he'd bite on them until they quit but the rats would get in their licks biting up his face. So he learned to grab them, whip them up into the air about 8-10', then chomp them on the way down, then immediately whip them back into the air. He'd keep that up until he sensed the rat was a goner. That dog was like possessed if a rat was in sight. One time he was chasing a rat around the chicken house making chaos, knocking stuff over, etc. I stepped inside to see what the ruckus was about. Caught a blur of a panicked rat with the dog on its tail. The rat leaped up and latched onto my thigh which freaked me out. Nothing like 4 sets of rat claws digging into your 11 yr old thigh despite blue jeans. My next thought was the dog was going to get the rat and my thigh would be collateral damage. Fortunately the rat had lightning reflexes and jumped off my leg before the dog got to him, and fortunately the dog had quicker reflexes and didn't chomp on my thigh. He got the rat a second later. The whole incident from beginning to end was maybe 5-6 seconds but it seemed much much longer when you're trying to whack the rat off your leg. That was over 50 years ago but is still vivid in my memory like a video.

Some are too good at it for their own good, I was told of a cat that was very good at catching mice, and at one point had one in her mouth and one under each front paw, leading to a, "What now, smartypants?" moment.

    • The Jews of the first five books were pastoral. No use to or for cats.

  • mnthe.info/bill/video/rrGMs5epfamWbmc The late SF author Robert Heinlein once posed the riddle...where does your lap go when you stand up? Ans...the cat took it. Iff you have ever been owned by a cat then you know that cats are proof the Earth is not flat...if it was they would have pushed everything off the edge: as they are won't to do for any flat surface...almost like they enjoy the thump when the object hits the floor.

    • Honestly, I liked it. Maybe dogs and cats weren't your cup of tea. To each his own.

  • Great podcast! The first recorded cat name was Nedjem which means Sweetie in Egyptian, which applies to the History Guy as well.

  • I used to raise Catahoula cowdogs. One bloodline was reputed to have harlequin dane in it. You could see it in some of them. Interestingly, my smallest female looked most like a miniature dane.

  • Overall I really like this channel. The majority of the material provided is very interesting. However I’m not fond of the format used for this episode. With the static screen this is more of a podcast than a MNthe video.

  • My husband and I both grew up with dogs, and so did our two kids. Our son has a dog. Interestingly, both my husband and son developed allergies to cats in early adulthood. So, our daughter now has two cats - is she trying to send a message to our menfolk?? 😄
