The History Guy Podcast: Pirates! The Wreck of the Whydah and Albert Hicks

Joshua Geiger, The History Guy's son, chats with THG about the creation of episodes of forgotten history and trivia in a behind-the-scenes look at The History Guy channel. Find the podcast on your favorite podcast app with RSS feed:

The History Guy podcast features two stories of Pirates! First the tale of the Whydah Galley, a slave ship turned pirate, and the ill-fated crew that served under "Black Sam" Bellamy. The second story is set in 19th century New York, when a ship is discovered abandoned, with nothing aboard except blood... and a few cut-off fingers.

This is original content based on research by The History Guy. Images in the Public Domain are carefully selected and provide illustration. As very few images of the actual event are available in the Public Domain, images of similar objects and events are used for illustration.

All events are portrayed in historical context and for educational purposes. No images or content are primarily intended to shock and disgust. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Non censuram.

  • I bought the treasure island book as a kid on the flea market, that was my first real introduction to pirates. Read that book so many times... Still can't remember any of it lol probably thanks to all the alcohol. Like a pirate I guess. A while ago I found the channel drachinifel, which is all about naval history. Including, of course, pirates. That and assassins creed black flag got me interested in pirates again, and of course this channel is very useful for feeding my never ending hunger for knowledge. Because after all, every good story involves pirates, and history deserves to be remembered.

(Let's face it, conformists are kinda boring. )Thanks for doing this research. Wonderful history. Love it. One day I hope historians discover that there really was a Dread Pirate Roberts. :)

  • I was a cub master some years ago. Pack meetings were held monthly, each with a different theme. The best meeting we ever had was a sailing-theme meeting. We started off 'singing' the ABC song. When we got to 'R' is became 'arrgh!' and Pirates took over the meeting. One of the dad's had eye patches for all the kids. The next day I was walking my dog when when I saw one of my cub scouts and his little brother. Wearing their eye patches, they gone to a neighbor's to tell them about being pirates. Needless to say, we told all the pirate jokes except for one I had come up with. "When sailing the 7 seas, where does the pirate captain walk the pirate dog?" "On the poop deck"

  • My uncle served in WWII and came through that without a scratch in spite of being in combat. He was discharged from the Navy and came home. He went rabbit hunting with a friend and his left hand was severely injured and amputated due to an accidental discharge of the shotgun he was using in the hunt. My uncle didn't like the artificial hand they gave him and preferred a hook that had a clasping feature actuated by his forearm muscle. He moved to New Orleans and went to work on towboats in the Intercoastal Waterway. He earned his pilot's license and became the skipper of the towboat. He acquired a nickname due to his lost hand, they called him Captain Hook. Though he was never a pirate, and never met Peter Pan, his memory sails on in our family lore. It may not have the romance of losing a hand in a saber duel with a pirate but it does give us something to talk about. And I can truthfully say that I am the nephew of Captain Hook.

    • @Kathy Astrom Sounds like non-conformism runs strong in your DNA, Kathy Astrom. Any other types of "outlaws" ? My mother's side were mostly sharecroppers, although there is a family story, as yet unconfirmed, that Daniel Boone was a great (great, great, etc.) uncle. A bit of Mafia on my Dad's side in Chicago. Gee, pirates would have been so much fun. :)

      WyomingHomeWyomingHomeСарын өмнө
    • @WyomingHome On another branch of the family tree, I have a 9th great-grandfather who was a sea captain in the early 18th century. He had captained a British man-o-war in 1709, and then his cargo ship in 1717 was captured by French pirates. So, pirates are on two different lines!
