Just Nuisance of the Royal Navy

Just Nuisance, a Great Dane of remarkable size and legendary appetite, was the only dog ever to be officially enlisted into the Royal Navy. He was beloved of sailors in the greater Cape Town, South Africa area. This special episode of The History Guy features pictures of viewers' dogs.

  • My father served on the USS Piranha (SS-389) in WW II. They had a mascot dog named "Water Slug" who went on patrol with them. His name came from the term for firing a torpedo tube filled with water instead of a torpedo to test the firing system.

  • That's a sweet story...right up there with Sgt. Reckless. Pack animals are amazing in their willingness to adapt and fit in with (what I'm sure they view as insanity) our human ways. They just want a pack. Nuisances' pack just happened to be the Royal Navy! I'm sure this changed a lot of sailor's lives for the better.

  • My grand-father, William J Bartholomew, served in the Royal Navy based in Simonstown Naval Dockyards and both he and my Grandmother had on numerous occasions actually met AB Nuisance on the train. Simonstown is at the very southern end of the line. The last stop so to say and from there it is a good 20 minutes walk to the quayside of the naval docks. I clearly remember both my grandparents telling me stories of the times that they had encountered AB Nuisance all the way at the other end of the line in Cape Town station, escorting drunken sailors back to the train. I was fortunate enough to serve on both South African mine sweepers and frigates from 1977 until 1979 and AB Nuisance was still a very active topic of conversation on the mess decks, and not unusually as a common slur to the effect that "AB Nuisance could probably have done a better job of..." what ever you were doing at the time, were it chipping rust of a deck or trying to splice a wire rope... the Senior Ratings were always keen to compare your pathetic attempt at seamanship with the prodigeous achievements of this factual and heroic character. The town square where his memorial statue is located so that he can look down over the naval dockyards was a favorite stop over of ours going to and from the train station from the ships while on liberty. AB Just Nuisance certainly Deserves to be Remembered. www.simonstown.com/just-nuisance

  • Yeah. Nuisance, great dog, wonderful. I'm a South African who has lived dogs all my life. What shaped me was " Jock of the Bushveld" by Sir Percy Fitzpatrick. Or Patsy Fitzpertrick. Anyway, I wound up working with tracking dogs in the SADF. Only thing the left hasn't yet been able to take from a man is how his dog loves him

  • Speaking of dogs and the military, we had a pet in Vietnam in 69 in the rear area of the battalion I was in. We were field troops who only got back in the rear every 45 days or so. When we got off the truck, he seemed to know we were coming and was sitting patiently at the entrance. He had a broken rear leg which the vet said could not be set so she dragged the right rear along with her. One night, after much beer, we returned and turned in only to see him scooting across the area with a group of newly acquired friends we assumed were canines. I remarked that it was nice to see he had some friends to play with. I was quickly corrected to 2 things. They weren't friends, and they weren't dogs.

One day this huge dog bound up to me, almost knocked me over as his paws hit my shoulders, and the licked my entire face with its huge tongue. It is something you never forget. Revolting, but lovely too.

  • He may have been the only dog ever officially enrolled in the RN; the Wrens however... Also, the lowest rank in the Navy at the time wouldn't have been Ordinary but Boy; these would later become Assistant and Junior Assistant respectively, with 1st and 2nd class gradations depending on completion of training.

  • I bought the book and after reading it was amazed. Considering the time honored traditions of the Royal Navy, and that this account occurred primarily during time of war, it is astounding how members of the service including several of significant rank, came together to support and care for Nuisance. I highly recommend reading the book if you have the chance.

When we take our boards to the beach he dashes out and struggles frantically to get on . I haul him up by the scruf of his neck plonk him in the middle of the deck , push the board down a wave and all I see is two eyes and nose .standing backwards as he keeps his eye on me. he stays on the board all the way to the sand and just waits there. now he gets on the board on the beach. the problem is now I cant surf in peace. Hes a bloody nuisance .

I'm ashamed to say I've been living in Cape Town since 1997 and have never been to see it, despite having known about it the whole time (I think it was my grandfather who first told me the story many years ago, he having grown up in Cape Town). BTW some miscreant removed the collar and cap from the statue earlier this year - apparently they've since been replaced.
