Arch Pirate Henry Every

There was one pirate in history who successfully captured possibly the world’s most valuable pirate haul ever. And then… he disappeared. Perhaps the only thing better than a story involving pirates, is one in which the legend lives on.

  • We've seen numerous historical recountings of stories involving pirates; how about some stories about *Pirate Radio stations* ? There were several famous ones in Mexico such as the one run by a quack doctor who sold impotence treatments made from goat testicles ( Woody Guthrie once had a radio show on that station, and ZZ Top wrote "Heard It On the X" about it). Another off the coast of Britain was known as Radio Caroline, there was a movie made about that one or a similar station, which got around the BBC 's ownership of all airwaves by broadcasting from outside the territorial limits. Anchored ships or abandoned oil derricks were good places to set up a radio station, outside the limits of government control. "So how far do we have to go to hear that Pirate Radio?/ one song that'll steal our hearts, and turn them into silver and gold/ Well I've been driving my car real slow, and my baby wants to know, when we gonna hear our song on that Pie-I-I-rate Radio?". From a song by John Hiatt. And also this from ZZ Top: " do you remember back in nineteen- sixty- six/ country Jesus, hillbilly blues, that's where I learned my licks/ From coast to coast and line to line, in every county there/ I'm talking about that outlaw X just cutting through the air/ anywhere y'all, everywhere y'all, I heard it, I heard it, I heard it on the X/ We can all thank Doctor B, who stepped across the line/ With lots of watts he took control, the 1st one of its kind/ So listen to your radio most each and every night/ 'Cause if you don't I'm sure you won't get to feeling right......"

I learned that those flags were more than just a skull and crossbones. One man who NEVER SHOULD HAVE BECOME A PIRATE was Steede Bonnet. Talk about someone who had no idea what he was doing.✌✌✌✌

  • History Guy, I'm hoping you can do a follow-up on where the storybook image of what a pirate looks like comes from. Why do make-believe pirates wear gaudy frilled outfits, have an eye patch, and either a peg leg or a hook? It might not seem to be history deserving to be remembered, but it does misinform countless storybooks and films.

  • I read about this pirate in, "Villians of all nations". The loot from this pirate raid is unimaginable. It was the Holy Grail of piracy. Every's fate is unknown. Ever the cynic, I will assume he died penniless, hunted, and broken. The British Royal Navy and the East India Company didn't play no radio.

  • Pirates were a mixed bag. Some of them weren't that bad - they just wanted your money - but others were really horrible. There's a story about how one of the things these pirates did with the people they captured. They were on a island and they took two palm trees that were next to each other - and using ropes and the muscles of the crews - bent the trees over towards each other. Then - they'd take someone they were going to kill - and tie an arm and a leg on one side to one tree - and the same on the other. Then - they let the trees go - tearing the person in half. All of this was of course done to the cheers of the drunken pirates as they amused themselves with their captives. The women were all treated as you would expect but I can't say wither any of them were tied to the trees ... .
